+110% Organic Traffic in 15 Months: An Internal Linking & IA Rebuild

Organic Traffic Index (Baseline = 100)

Indexed monthly organic traffic, baseline month = 100. A rise to 210 reflects the disclosed +110% growth over 15 months.

The Problem

A New Zealand custom-print e-commerce brand running on WordPress had a site structure working against itself: duplicate categories targeting overlapping keywords, similar-intent pages competing for the same queries, and a set of orphan pages with no internal links pointing to them at all. Individually, none of these looked like a single "big" problem — but together they were splitting ranking signals across pages that should have been consolidated, and starving otherwise-useful content of any internal authority.

The Approach

Every fix was implemented personally, end-to-end:

  1. Duplicate category consolidation. Categories targeting the same or near-identical search intent were identified via a full site crawl and merged into a single, stronger page.
  2. Similar-intent page merging. Content pages competing for the same queries were combined rather than left to cannibalize each other's rankings.
  3. Orphan page integration. Pages with no internal links pointing to them were identified and worked into the site's navigation and contextual internal linking.
  4. Internal link rebuild to priority pages. High-value category and product pages were given stronger internal link support from relevant content and navigation throughout the site.

Obstacle: consolidating without losing existing rankings

Merging near-duplicate or competing pages carries real risk: done carelessly, it can drop the combined ranking below what either page achieved separately. Each merge decision was based on which page held the stronger existing signals (rankings, backlinks, and traffic), with 301 redirects from the weaker page to the stronger one and close post-merge monitoring in Search Console to confirm consolidated pages retained — and then grew — the combined ranking value.

The Result

+110%

Monthly organic traffic growth over 15 months

0

Ranking losses from consolidated pages — signals combined, not split

The information-architecture rebuild removed the internal competition that had been suppressing growth, and gave previously orphaned and under-linked pages the internal authority needed to rank and drive traffic.
